NATURAL bodybuilder Alun Davies is on top of the world after being crowned king in The Big Apple.
The 40-year-old gym owner and railway worker has just returned from New York where he was made the International Natural Bodybuilding Federation’s Light Heavyweight Champion of the World.
It was the latest accolade for the multi award-winning bodybuilder who also won the European Championship in Milan last July.
Alun, from Readers Way, Rhoose, has reached the top through a punishing training schedule and a diet that consists mainly of turkey, egg whites, vegetables and lots of water.
Alun, who is 5ft 6ins and has been the British champion several times, returned home with the impressive world title and trophy after taking part in the competition in New York last month.
His victory means that he now has a “pro card” which will allow him to take part in professional competitions in America, Asia and other parts of the world. It is an option the railway shunter is considering although he has not made a final decision.
Alun, who is teetotal, and has run the Natural Physique gym in Porth for the past 15 years, began bodybuilding at the age of 14.
He said: “I just got into it. I like it because it is a one-man sport. Your destiny is in your own hands.
“I am an insular person and not into team games very much. What you achieve in bodybuilding, you achieve by your own means, although you do need support. My wife, Merilyn, is my support and has played the biggest part in my success.”
Alun’s daily diet will see him eat porridge, 15 to 20 egg whites, turkey breasts and vegetables, and drink three to four gallons of water.
He rises at 4am each day and spends about 90 minutes “fast walking” to burn off fat.
He will also do two-and-a-half hours of cardiovascular exercise and spend time weight training in the gym. This all has to fit in with his shift patterns at work.
“I’ve been doing this for 26 years. It is a total lifestyle. Winning competitions doesn’t mean that much to me. It is the journey that matters. If I didn’t enjoy it, I couldn’t do it.”
Father-of-one Alun, who weighs 13-and- a-half stone, can spend more than £100 a week on food, although the gallons of water he drinks each day comes from the tap.
He said: “I would like to thank Pete North and the management team at Arriva Trains and Pacific Nutrition, in Treforest, for all their support.”
