Igmuscle works with the local community

“It’s such a good way to gain the trust of and connect with youngsters,” says boxing loving fire-fighter Carl Miller, who delivers coaching as part of the Brigades Fire-Fit initiative. It’s got dozens of young people off their sofas and into the gym in the Cleveland Fire Brigade area.

Carl, a former North of England School Boy boxing champion and member of the Hartlepool Catholic Boxing Club, has linked in with local groups to deliver sessions and to reach out to youngsters who’ve never been involved in the sport before.

One of the sessions Carl, Gavin and Brian are currently delivering in is based at Throston Youth Club on Wiltshire Way, Hartlepool. The initiative, fronted by Brian Dineen and Gavin Woodward from Igmuscle and Breeze Through, involves both children and their parents/guardians attending each session to partake in boxing coaching.

The sessions are proving to be very popular with an average of 45 adults and young people attending each week.

Brian, who has been a boxing coach for approximately 10 years has stated ”Working with Brigade coaches such as Carl is a great example of Partnership working. Both the adults and children who attend the sessions have a lot of respect for the job the Fire-fighters do.  Boxing allows the coaches to communicate with the Young people and adults on a One to one basis.

Jonathan Cole, 15, from Dyke house says ‘’ The boxing sessions at Boys Welfare are fun, get teenagers like me fit and are a good activity that keeps us of the streets. I meet new fiends and learn new skills. Brian and Gavin from Headland future and the Fire Brigade Tutors are all spot on, are good role models and talk to all youngsters as equals and on first name terms. Seeing Fire-fighters doing sessions like this has made me even more determined to become a Fire-fighter when I leave school’’.

Carl, who is currently serving at Stranton Fire Station. says:  “ I feel working on the Fire-Fit initiative is a good way of  interacting with young people which  will hopefully reduce any instances of when Fire Crews attend incidents in the areas in which the sessions are being delivered. These are the kinds of relationships we’re building and getting involved with youngsters through sport is another way of breaking down the barriers.”
